From the fall of 2014 until the spring of 2015 I was at my absolute worst. After alienating my family, losing my job and experiencing multi-day blackouts I finally took action by calling the VA. I assumed my drinking was because I had a very hard life. I was incapable of taking responsibility for anything in my life.
I kept thinking that way because I was only 18. Soon after this incident I decide to ask for the help that I needed all along. I reached out to a really close friend that I knew was in recovery and she helped me a lot. I told myself that I would never be like them and I wouldn’t live like them but sure enough when I got older I started to drink. I really enjoyed the way alcohol made me feel. I thought it made everything go away and I never thought that I had a problem. My first drink was when I was in the 6th grade and I was just hanging out with my older brothers and some of their friends. It wasn’t until I was at the end of 8th grade that I started drinking every weekend.

My whole goal right now is to be a good husband, a good father, and to help other alcoholics and addicts who are going through the same thing that I have. There is no worse feeling than that hopelessness of wanting to disappear. I felt like I went to bed at 18 years old and woke up at 40 in treatment with five children and a raging drug and alcohol problem. I just thought that if I put drugs down, if I put alcohol down, that everything would get better and that I didn’t need to find out what was really wrong, what was really going on. I thought it was the drugs and alcohol and not anything else. Doing the work I’ve done in recovery this time I was able to look back and realize I had no coping skills my whole life. I always wanted to run from things; I always looked for ways to get out of things and not deal head-on.
